HLA-CSPIF panel on commercial off-the-shelf distributed simulation
Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) simulation packages are widely used in many areas of industry. Several research groups are attempting to integrate distributed simulation principles and techniques with these packages to potentially give us COTS distributed simulation. The High Level Architecture-COTS Simulation Package Interoperation Forum (HLA-CSPIF) is a group of researchers and practitioners that are studying methodological and technological issues in this area. This panel paper presents the views of four members of this forum on the technical problems that must be overcome for this emerging field to be realized
Model Continuity in Discrete Event Simulation: A Framework for Model-Driven Development of Simulation Models.
Most of the well known modeling and simulation methodologies state the importance of conceptual modeling in simulation studies and they suggest the use of conceptual models during the simulation model development process. However, only a limited number of methodologies refers to howto move from a conceptual model to an executable simulation model. Besides, existing modeling and simulation methodologies do not typically provide a formal method for model transformations between the models in different stages of the development process. Hence, in the current M&S practice, model continuity is usually not fulfilled. In this article, a model driven development framework for modeling and simulation is in order to bridge the gap between different stages of a simulation study and to obtain model continuity. The applicability of the framework is illustrated with a prototype modeling environment and a case study in the discrete event simulation domain
Audio source location for a digital TV-Director
Three algorithms are presented for location of audio sources using standard workstations and a minimal amount of resources. The audio source location is based on time-delay estimation. The algorithms use general human speech properties and straightforward heuristics on human speaker behaviour to acquire accurate and efficient estimation of delays
DISTRIBUTED SIMULATION IN INDUSTRY – A SURVEY PART 3 – THE HLA STANDARD IN INDUSTRY
Distributed simulation, more specifically the HLA standard, is hardly applied in industry. We have conducted an extensive survey with COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) simulation package vendors and simulation experts, both from defence and industry, that focuses, amongst others, on the question what the reasons are behind this phenomenon. In this paper we analyze the reactions that we obtained, categorizing them into arguments related to distributed simulation in general, arguments related to HLA and arguments pertaining to the embedding of HLA concepts in COTS packages. These answers will lead us, we believe, to insights that can serve as guidelines to make distributed simulation more attractive for the industrial simulation community.
